The present study also revealed a gender effect acting as a moderator in the selection of educational apps. One of the significant contributions of this research is that it extended the applications of uses and gratification theory far beyond traditional media to explain the intention of using educational apps. Communication technology innovations have led to several applications for easy and affordable education. Consequently, students and teachers can now access new technologies, devices, and applications to enhance their educational experiences . Digitally based applications have radically changed the education experience by providing almost unlimited possibilities . Even though educational apps have become a readily available alternative to classroom education, mainly during pandemics like COVID-19, no research has been done to find out the learners’ motivations for using different educational applications. The current study developed a reliable and valid instrument for measuring reasons for the use of educational applications. By means of a mixed-method approach typically used in uses and gratification (U&G) research, i.e. open-ended essays and a national survey, this study identified seven gratifications that motivated the intention of learners to use educational apps: academic help, convenience, entertainment, social influence, novelty, engagement, and activity. The results show that academic support, ease of use, and social pressure were the main factors leading to the intention of using educational applications.
